Convention Update

The 2016 VFP Convention will start Thursday evening, August 11, with the President’s Reception at 5 pm, followed by the Poetry Reading at 6:30pm. The Convention will continue through midday, Monday, August 15. 

For those arriving on Wednesday, August 10th, check-in at the Administration Building.  Join the national staff and volunteers at the Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley Executive Dining Room as we stuff registration folders.  We will meet at noon.

How do I get to the site of the convention - Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley?

Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley is located at 2601 Warring Street in Berkeley, CA 94720. 

If you are driving, park your vehicle in the horseshoe.  You have 15-20 minutes to register for the convention, pick up a parking pass, obtain a dorm room key, and move your vehicle to the parking lot.   Designated parking for VFP members is in the Southwest Parking Lot indicated here.

If you are riding the public transportation system called BART or Bay Area Rapid Transit.

From the San Francisco Airport take the yellow line towards Pittsburgh/Bay Point line.  You must change to either the orange or red Richmond-bound lines to get to the Ashby station.  The best places to make the change is at the 19th Street or MacArthur stations. 

From Oakland Airport you should take the orange Richmond line.

WHICHEVER line you take, you should get off at the ASHBY BART STATION and call the convention phone at (510) 612-6780 for van pickup. 

VFP will provide shuttle vans from Ashby BART to the campus for attendees arriving at reasonable hours.  The specific hours will be posted when they have been determined.  During service hours, the shuttle will arrive at Ashby on half-hour cycles during Thursday and Friday, and, when called, on Saturday.  Vans will have the VFP logo on the door.

Note that BART does not run all night.  If you are coming in later or earlier, you will need to arrange either a Super Shuttle or take a cab.  In that case, a cab from OAK will be substantially cheaper than one from SFO.  You will need to make similar calculations for your flight home.

Will There Be a Cost for Parking?

There will be a cost for parking - $15 per night.  Parking passes can be purchased on the registration form or picked up at the registration table.

Berkeley Parking and Transportation requires a permit to park in any of the UC parking lots. So even if someone has a handicapped placard, they'll still need to purchase a permit in order to park in the lots at Clark Kerr.

Is Childcare Available During the Convention?

A qualified yes.  As a family, we encourage you to bring your family to our convention.  However, we do not have access to a dedicated facility or trained staff for taking care of and entertaining several children of differing ages.  If you will need someone to watch your child while you speak in a workshop, or some similar situation, we will try to accommodate your needs.  But you have to make arrangements with the organizing committee well before the convention.  Please call Denny Riley 510-612-6780, or Paul Cox 510-418-3436 no later than August 6 to discuss.

What extraordinary and wonderful public events will be at the VFP Conference this year?


We, of course, have the usual wonderful internal events such as the President’s Reception, Poetry Night, 24 workshops, 4 plenaries, 1 three-sided mini plenary, and the ever popular Annual Business Meeting.  In addition:

Friday Evening Public Event at UC Berkeley’s Pauley Ballroom: Helen Caldicott, Andrew Bacevich, Oliver Stone and Roy Scranton will each give us their amazing insights on war and the environment, followed by a spirited panel discussion moderated by Rhodessa JonesCost for the Friday event is included in the conference registration, but for the public, tickets can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets, the Pegasus Bookstores in Albany, Berkeley and Oakland, or at the Registration table or National Office Store table during the convention.

Saturday Evening Banquet
also at UC Berkeley’s Pauley Ballroom:  Ann Jones will be our keynote speaker. Cost for the Saturday Banquet event is included in the full or reduced registration.  For the public, tickets can be purchased at the door the night of the event or at the Registration table or National Office Store table during the convention

Sunday Evening Music: 
The famed Freight and Salvage will host VFP musical friends and family.  

Miles Megaciph, Peter Tracy, Pat Scanlon, Emily Yates, Jim Toler, the VFP Chorus and others within our talented family are confirmed.  Headliners are Bay Area recording artists Jeff Turner and Mike Rufo and No Exit.

Note that, while the Friday and Saturday events are included in the cost for the Convention Registration, the Sunday event will require separate ticket purchase through Brown Paper Tickets, the Pegasus Bookstores in Albany, Berkeley and Oakland, or at the Registration table or National Office Store table during the convention.

Are Special Accommodations being made for Accessibility?

The campus is fully wheelchair accessible, and accessible rooms are available.  The campus is on a moderate slope, so in stair areas ramps are provided. Buildings that are assigned to VFP have elevators.  Please call if you have special needs.
